Moving day

January 28, 2007

It got far too confusing trying to keep track of two different blogs, and I really couldn’t see any advantages to it, so now everything’s moved over here.

And, with that, it’s moving day!

Some thought-provoking points from Impact this week (and last) will be in the next post, but there were a couple of laugh out loud parts as well. The highlight was the well-timed emergancy ‘siren’ in the middle of the Bible reading:

Oli: “And the angel said to Cornelius…”

Siren: “In the interest of safety, please evacuate the building”

How we laughed! In fact, I’m still laughing now as I try to type.

Heading out on a mission with David to get ice-cream, haribo, petrol and pizza – not the best sequence since we ended up with cream, haribo, petrol and pizza – resulted in plenty of banter and laughs. Also, the discovery of a set of (wet) swings we didn’t know were there before.

Jason is a real encouragement to laugh – as I was chatting with him at church he would really laugh at things that were funny, and I couldn’t help laughing along with him.

On the way home, I brushed past a branch which must have had a puddle of water caught in a leaf so it tipped its water into my ear. It was cold!

On the phone with David, I found out that Sky have bought the rights for Lost from channel 4 which has many terrestrial viewers up in arms. To placate them, Sky have promised to show the programme earlier than channel 4 were going to. Huh? Is the idea that they have less time to get Sky set up, or that they can miss the episodes sooner than would otherwise be possible? We also discussed the idea of an ice-cream and Haribo pizza which I’m hoping will be forgotten by Wednesday.

Then I was upstairs helping to raise David’s desk so that his chair will roll underneath by putting cardboard rolls under each leg. Now it’s 2 feet higher and very wobbly and looks hilarious. His room is just above mine so if I get woken by large chunks of falling plaster I know who to blame…

After having left a loud and tuneless “happy birthday” song on Caroline’s voicemail, we could only hold in raucous laughter for a moment. The important question, though, is whether it makes her smile.

Not being sure whether the decision we took as a committee to cancel the mission week was genuine or just in a dream (it was the latter). I really have my finger on that pulse, then…

We were meeting people to take them to “Only One Life” on the other side of Hyde Park. Gabz and I stayed behind to meet a second group of people and the first group set off walking across the park (much to the indignation of Joel since it was raining). After our wait – during which time a misunderstanding meant Gabz thought I was asking him if he wanted to go and get some tea and we were half way before I asked where we were going and he said ‘to get some tea…’ – we took the tube and made it five minutes before the (wet) group who had walked. It was funny because it wasn’t us.

This is incredibly geeky, but I laughed quite hard after a lack of forsight while writing a computer program caused me to write:

while (k < p+1)

       temp = temp + 0;

END

In essence, those lines tell the computer to test to see if a certain condition is true and, if it is, then not to do anything about it. Exactly the same function could (more efficiently) be coded:

It wasn’t a laugh, but it was such a joy to read this letter from John Piper to JI Packer. John Piper could have let his success go to his head but after his hugely sucessful ministry he refers to himself as one of “the little guys”, and this paragraph was a true lesson for me in humility:

May the Lord of glory give you strength and wisdom and faithfulness till he comes or until he calls. It will be a delight to stand somewhere behind you in the massive choir to acclaim our Lord in the resurrection.

He acknowledges Packer as a truly great man but isn’t jealous and indeed thanks God that Packer has been able to serve as he has.

Katherine on how breakfast can get so boring: “this week I had chille-con-carne on toast every day just to make it more interesting”.

There was a song at church where men and women sung different parts so our words were in white on the projector and their words in yellow. On the verse where everyone sung the same thing, I noticed that the letters alternated being yellow and white. I laughed at it, but God bless technicians who are willing to take the time to serve God’s people in their preparation.

Matt Fuller’s comments on his own personal mug in his sermon.
